President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has welcomed Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on his return to the Maldives after more than five months abroad.
Speaker Nasheed returned to the Maldives on October 11, more than five months after he left the country to seek treatment for the injuries sustained during the May 6 terrorist attack near his residence in Male’. Upon his return, he was greeted at the airport by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and several senior state officials. PSM News understands the speaker will be staying in the country for three days before returning to the UK once again.
Speaker Nasheed was severely injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle was triggered while he was getting into his car near his residence in Male’ on the night of May 6. He required multiple life saving surgeries at ADK Hospital before being transported to Germany for further treatment. He later travelled to the UK for advanced treatment.
The perpetrators of the May 6 attack are currently undergoing trial. The state has pressed charges against four individuals for planning and carrying out the terrorist attack against the speaker.
