Judges’ Association condemns acts that threaten judges’ security

Judges’ Association of Maldives has released a statement condemning all acts that threaten the security and well-being of judges.

In the statement, the judges’ association stated the Constitution of the Maldives clearly prohibits any act that influences the work of judges. Noting judges are also members of the community, the association said efforts to intimidate and threaten judges by spreading false rumours on social media or other platforms hinder the efforts to establish a fair and independent judiciary. The association condemned all such acts and called on the public to refrain from committing such acts.

The judges’ association further stated any objections an individual may have regarding a judge’s ruling can be expressed through an appeal at a higher court. The association said resorting to acts that threaten judges’ security instead of using the appropriate platforms to express discontent over a ruling is not acceptable.

Concluding the statement, the judges’ association called on state authorities and the public not to commit any acts that compromise the safety and security of judges and obstructs their work.
