MPS seeks 200 bodycams for frontline police

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed it is seeking 200 body-worn cameras for frontline officers.

MPS initially sought the supply and delivery of 1,400 bodycams for frontline policing. However, the scope of the project was reduced after interested parties failed to meet the requirements.

MPS conducted a trial of body-worn cameras with frontline officers in February 2020. At the time, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said MPS was conducting work to improve the police service and solve the challenges faced by police officers. MPS has stated the evidence shows bodycams improve police conduct and assist them in recording evidence of criminal activity.

Additionally, police officers began using speed guns in 2019 to capture speeding vehicles, as part of their work to improve policing. MPS is currently using speed guns to monitor and record details of vehicles during various traffic monitoring operations.
