President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated his foremost national duty is to protect the interests of the nation. He made the statement addressing the nation at the official reception to mark this year's National Day.
Speaking at the event, President Solih elaborated on the elements of Maldivian nationalism and said defending independence, maintaining safety and security while reinforcing Islamic values, protecting human rights, and supporting democratic ideals are all nationalistic characteristics.
The president also spoke of the valorous ventures and sacrifices made by Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam who delivered the Maldives from the occupation of the Portuguese.
The president said National Day is the day that best propagates and instils individualism and unity amongst all Maldivians. He also underlined the need of upholding nationalistic principles and urged all Maldivians to safeguard these virtues.
Furthermore, President Solih urged all Maldivians to impart the highest values and attributes to their children and highlighted the importance of fostering a nationalistic attitude. The president also remarked that long-serving state employees and those who have dedicated their lives to public service have not been appreciated on a national level.
He announced the government has decided to honour long-serving public employees on a national level annually on Republic Day starting this year.
The gathering at the National Day reception included First Lady Fazna Ahmed, President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) Abdulla Shahid, senior government officials, members of the parliament, and senior officials from state institutions.
