Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) has stated efforts are underway to modernise the broadcasting laws, regulations and standards in the Maldives. The statement was made by BroadCom President Mariyam Waheeda in a special message published on the occasion of National Broadcasting Day.
In her message, the BroadCom president said the commission is undertaking several efforts to strengthen the broadcasting sector of the Maldives. As such, she noted the commission is working on integrating the modern changes that have been brought to the broadcasting sector to local broadcasting laws and regulations, and to establish a modern broadcasting standard in the Maldives. In this regard, she revealed BroadCom has submitted the amendments to the laws and regulations to the Parliament of the Maldives and other relevant authorities.
Speaking further, Mariyam Waheeda noted the lack of a suitable budget presents major challenges to the work undertaken by BroadCom. As such, she noted BroadCom faces difficulties in properly addressing the complaints submitted to the commission, due to the lack of appropriate resources.
The National Broadcasting Day is marked on October 4, which was the day radio signals were first introduced to the Maldives. The aim of marking the day is to acknowledge the role played by broadcasters in building the country, through conveying important information and creating awareness among the public.
