President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Samaau Ahmed Najeeb as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). President Solih presented the letter of appointment during a special ceremony held at the President's Office.
Her oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed. Samaau most recently served at the Attorney General's Office (AGO) as a state attorney. She also worked at the Embassy of the Maldives in India between 2010 and 2011. Samaau attained her Master of Human Rights Law from the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, Australia, in 2018. She has taken part in a wide variety of professional workshops, seminars, and forums and is a member of the governmental expert team for the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).
Parliament of the Maldives approved Samaau to be appointed to the vacant membership position at the HRCM in September with 42 votes in favour. Four membership positions at the HRCM were vacated in July last year following the resignation of three members and dismissal of one member through a no-confidence vote at the Parliament.
Three of the vacant slots were filled in September last year, with the appointment of Aminath Shifa'ath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed, and Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla.
