President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated the candidates who were elected in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) national congress elections. In a tweet, the president also thanked the candidates who ran in the elections and the members of the main ruling party who voted.
The national congress elections were the most contested polls held by the main ruling party.
MDP placed around 300 ballot boxes in schools in all but three inhabited islands in the country and hired over 900 officials. MDP revealed that 455 candidates ran in the elections for various districts and positions, while 165 candidates of the party's national congress elections have won unopposed. The party regulations state candidates will be declared the winner if the minimum number of candidates vie for the particular seats.
MDP reviewed its membership before formulating the list of voters and 93,165 party members had qualified to vote in the election, while 940 members were excluded. MDP is the largest party in the Maldives with 93,354 registered members and the MDP national congress election is the largest internal election of the party.
