Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed main political figures have won their respective seats at the national congress elections.
The temporary results of the elections show former Mayor of Male' City Sifa Mohamed won the seat of President of the Male' City. Sifa won the seat against the Minister of State for National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure Akram Kamaluddeen, who is the current MDP President of the capital city.
Furthermore, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof won the seat of President of the North Central Province with an overwhelming majority. MDP initially banned Mahloof from running in the national congress election due to his alleged involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal. However, the main ruling party later reversed its ban after the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) stated the decision was unlawful.
Meanwhile, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail won the seat of President of Gan constituency with a large majority. Additionally, the temporary results show Alifushi constituency was heavily contested, with Parliamentarian Mohamed Rasheed Hussain winning the seat over Parliamentarian Hassan Ahmed.
The national congress elections were the most contested polls held by the main ruling party.
MDP placed around 300 ballot boxes in all but three inhabited islands in the country for the elections. MDP earlier revealed 165 candidates of the party's national congress elections have won unopposed. MDP regulations state candidates will be declared the winner if the minimum number of candidates vie for the particular seats.
