MDP holds its national congress elections

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held its national congress elections.

The national congress election is expected to be the most contested election held by the main ruling party. MDP placed around 300 ballot boxes in schools in all but three inhabited islands and hired over 900 officials in the country.

Senior MDP official Ahmed Abdulla said the election was held without any issues and that no major complaint has been submitted as of yet. However, he said officials have responded to minor complaints over administrative and management issues.

MDP revealed that 455 candidates ran in the elections for various districts and positions, while 165 candidates of the party's national congress elections have won unopposed. MDP regulations state candidates will be declared the winner if the minimum number of candidates vie for the particular seats.

MDP reviewed its membership before formulating the list of voters and 93,165 party members had qualified to vote in the election, while 940 members were excluded.

MDP is the largest party in the Maldives with 93,354 registered members and the MDP national congress election is the largest internal election of the party.
