Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated institutions should work to uphold independence and equality to maintain democratic principles. He made the statement while speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the five-year strategic plan of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
In his speech, Vice President Naseem thanked the people who made sacrifices to bring lasting democracy to the country. Noting the significance of the constitution introduced in 2008, the vice president said the most important right given to Maldivians was the right for citizens above the age of 18 to vote. He also said institutions should continue to ensure that elections are free and transparent, as well as uphold democratic principles and empower citizens.
Furthermore, Vice President Naseem stressed the importance of increasing the engagements of women in the political spectrum and said the administration is creating opportunities to empower women. He also emphasised the importance of upholding and strengthening democratic values, including majority rule and promoting equality and justice.
Speaking further, Vice President Naseem highlighted that Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid taking office as the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is one of the significant positive strides for the Maldives over the years. He added it proves the success of the foreign policies of the administration.
