MCS advises ex-president not to violate house arrest agreement

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has advised former President Abdulla Yameen not to violate the house arrest agreement. MCS made the decision after concluding its investigation into an incident in which the former president was seen participating in a political event.

Footage of the incident shows Yameen waving a national flag, and a flag representing the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), from his apartment window while his supporters gathered outside his home as part of a political rally. Yameen was also seen encouraging the PPM members gathered outside his home.

After the incident, MCS stated Yameen had violated his house arrest agreement, as prisoners under house arrest are not legally allowed to participate in political activities. In a written letter sent to Yameen, MCS advised the former president not to repeat such actions that violate his house arrest agreement.

Former President Yameen was transferred to his home in Male' City last April as he was deemed as a prisoner who was at a high risk of contracting the COVID-19. He is serving a five-year prison sentence after the Criminal Court of the Maldives found him guilty of laundering USD 1 million received as the acquisition cost for the lease of Vodamula, Gaafu Alifu Atoll for resort development through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

In addition, Maldives Police Service (MPS) has forwarded additional charges against the former president over the embezzlement of USD 1 million during the lease of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll for resort development through MMPRC.
