Faris Maumoon runs for MRM presidency

Faris Maumoon has submitted his candidature for the seat of the President of the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).

MRM was founded by Faris Maumoon's father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Faris had played an active political role in the opposition during President Abdulla Yameen's administration but has not been politically active in recent years.

MRM opened applications for its positions ahead of its first national convention, to be held on October 2. The positions opened for application include prominent positions such as the party president and party leader. Maumoon recently announced he has submitted his candidature for the position of MRM Leader.

Furthermore, members who have submitted their candidature for MRM vice president include Aminath Nadira, Managing Director of Maldive Gas Shazail Shiyam, and Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Shimaz Ali.

At the national convention, MRM members will also be electing 15 male members and 15 female members for the youth council, the president and vice president of the women's council, in addition to 20 members of the women's council. Candidates will also be vying for five seats in the elections committee, the disciplinary committee, and the appeals committee.

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) permitted MRM to hold the party convention in 2019. However, the party was previously unable to hold the convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
