Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed 165 candidates of the party's national congress elections have won unopposed.
The main ruling party has approved 733 candidates to run for various districts in the national congress elections, which are scheduled to be held on September 25. However, MDP announced 165 candidates have won without a vote, as they faced no opposition.
MDP regulations state candidates will be declared the winner if the minimum number of candidates vie for the particular seats. MDP is the largest party in the Maldives with 93,354 registered members and the national congress elections are the largest internal elections of the party. MDP will be placing 300 ballot boxes in various parts of the country and will be hiring 900 officials for the elections.
MDP stated it has reviewed its membership before formulating the list of voters and that 93,165 party members have been qualified to vote in the elections, while 940 members have been excluded from voting.
The main ruling party will soon be seeking election officials and has encouraged party members with no affiliation to candidates to submit applications.
