Parliament of the Maldives has approved Samaau Abdul Najeeb to be appointed to the vacant position at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). She was approved for the position with 42 parliamentarians voting in favour.
The President's Office received a total of 14 applications for the position. The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender endorsed Samaau after interviewing 11 nominations sent by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Her nomination was passed by the committee with votes from 9 members.
Four membership positions at the HRCM were vacated in July last year following the resignation of three members and dismissal of one member through a no-confidence vote at the Parliament. Three of the vacant slots were filled in September last year, with the appointment of Aminath Shifa'ath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed and Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla. Currently, there are four members in the HRCM, including Mariyam Muna, and one vacant seat.
HRCM was established in December 2003 as an independent and autonomous body to lead the promotion and protection of Human Rights under the Maldives Constitution and international human rights conventions.
