Chief Justice of the Maldives Ahmed Muthasim Adnan states judges should make rulings that do not violate the rights of any citizen. He made the statement during his speech at the swearing-in ceremony of judges held at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
In his speech, Chief Justice Adnan said judges have the highest responsibility in ensuring justice and fairness in the Maldives and they are not allowed to make decisions that violate the rights of citizens. The chief justice also said judges should uphold and strictly obey Islamic principles and the law outside of the courtroom and should practice discipline and adherence to Islamic tenets in their personal lives. Judges should be honest and truthful and show no inconsistencies in their behaviour both inside and outside the courts, he said.
Also speaking at the ceremony, President of JSC Hisaan Hussain highlighted how the unrelenting work done to fight for the independence of judges since 2008 despite the numerous obstructions have resulted in successfully achieving the goal. Hisaan said JSC is now focused on increasing public trust in the courthouse and that it is slowly achieving the goal with the help of judges.
She also said JSC is working on establishing means to ensure judges are more responsible and thorough. As such, Hisaan said the JSC has conducted 14 training sessions and plans to conduct 30 programmes this year.
