Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has revealed former President Abdulla Yameen has violated his house arrest agreement.
The statement by MCS follows an incident in which former President Yameen waved a national flag and a flag representing the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), from his apartment's window while his supporters gathered outside his home as part of a political rally. Yameen was also seen encouraging the PPM members gathered outside his home.
Prisoners under house arrest are not legally allowed to participate in political activities. In a tweet, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed said the MCS will investigate the issue and take action against the former president.
Former President Yameen was transferred to his home in Male' City in April as a prisoner who was at a high risk of contracting the COVID-19. He is serving a 5-year prison sentence after the Criminal Court of the Maldives found him guilty of laundering USD 1 million received as the acquisition cost for the lease of Vodamula, Gaafu Alifu Atoll for resort development through MMPRC.
In addition, Maldives Police Service (MPS) has forwarded additional charges against the former president over the embezzlement of USD 1 million during the lease of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll for resort development through MMPRC.
