Angolhitheemu Island Council elated with large number of concurrent ongoing projects

The island council of Angolhitheemu, Raa Atoll has expressed gratitude to the government for the large number of concurrent ongoing projects in the island. The council made the remarks during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s meeting with council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) of Angolhitheemu on September 9.

During the meeting, councillors revealed that they were elated with the administration's initiatives on the island, stating that there were currently more projects ongoing for the development of Angolhitheemu Island than had been conducted over the past forty years. They thanked the administration for the important initiatives and projects launched for the development of the island.

The members of the island council also shared several concerns with the president during the meeting, noting that they required an efficient way to manage the waste created during ongoing projects. Further, they stated the need to develop a swimming track and several other urban and social development programmes.

The WDC members also spoke during the meeting, and praised the president and the government for their efforts to empower women in the Maldives. They noted some difficulties they face in conducting their work due to the lack of office space, and requested to raise the wages for the women assigned as caretakers to clean and maintain the island.

President Solih addressed the concerns raised during the discussions, stating that he would provide a solution for the waste management issues they shared. He also stated that he would speak with the relevant government agencies regarding the other interests raised by the councillors and WDC members.

During the visit to Angolhitheemu on September 9, First Lady Fazna Ahmed visited the Angolhitheemu School, taking a tour of the premises and meeting with the faculty. First Lady Fazna expressed her gratitude for their dedication throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which included continuing to teach using innovative ways. She also mentioned how crucial it is to have a pleasant working environment and to work efficiently.

Senior administrators of the school discussed their concerns and needs at the meeting. They stated that they require some infrastructure and other resources in order to provide the best education possible. The Angolhitheemu School currently has 99 students enrolled in grades one through ten.

The first lady donated two books to the school library during her visit, one on bullying prevention and one on sexual violence awareness. She emphasised that protecting children is the top priority and that it is everyone's obligation to protect society from negative influences.

Following the visit to the school, the president and first lady proceeded to the Angolhitheemu Health Centre to inquire about the requirements and concerns of the management to provide the best possible medical services.

Angolhitheemu was the eighth destination of the president and first lady’s three-day trip to Shaviyani Atoll and Raa Atoll. Cabinet ministers, senior executives from the President’s Office and a delegation of high-level government officials accompanied the president and first lady on this trip.
