Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has met the incumbent President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir and discusses his plans as the newly elected president of the 76th session.
During the meeting held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, Bozkir wished Shahid success in his tenure and assured him of his support and cooperation. Shahid arrived in New York on August 29 to take over reins as the president of the 76th session. Since his arrival, Shahid has met with a number of representatives to the UN from different countries.
The foreign minister held discussions with various representatives on the priorities of Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), climate change, ocean, sustainable development, youth, climate change, reform, and development. He also met with the Ad Hoc Working Group on Revitalisation of the General Assembly and received an update on the progress made during the 75th session. In addition, he participated at the 11th Annual retreat Towards a Stronger UN General Assembly hosted by Finland's Mission. He further participated in a transition workshop held for the Office of The President of the General Assembly.
Foreign Minister Shahid said he used the opportunity to rally his team to implement the vision outlined in his theme for the new UNGA session, the Presidency of Hope.
