President of ACC Mariyam Shiuna has stated the commission does not provide any room to work for political and personal benefits when investigating cases.
Speaking at a function held to launch the new website of ACC and to recognise the hard work of its staff, the ACC president said the work carried out by the commission involves collaboration between several state institutions. Noting ACC carries the vital responsibility of investigating corruption within the state and take action accordingly, Shiuna said ACC’s role is linked to the hopes and expectations of the public and will therefore be subject to scrutiny. She added the commission receives criticism from several people, some of which are related to issues that need to be addressed by the commission while others are by people defending their political or personal interest. However, she assured that the commission provides no room to work for personal and political benefits while investigating a case.
Speaking further, the ACC president said she was pleased with the progress achieved in the efforts undertaken to speed up the investigation of cases. As such, Shiuna revealed ACC has completed more than 1,400 cases since the beginning of 2020, of which 30 cases were forwarded for prosecution. However, she acknowledged that the commission is still not able to complete the investigation of cases in the speed desired by the commission as well as the public.
During the function held on September 2, ACC launched its new website and awarded plaques to long-serving staff and retiring staff.
