Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has awarded the land reclamation and airport development project in Alifushi, Raa Atoll to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The contract for the project was signed by Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim at a ceremony held on September 1. The project, worth USD 29.2 million, is the largest infrastructure development project undertaken by a local company.
As part of the project, MTCC is tasked with reclaiming 50.5 hectares of land in Alifushi, including 40.5 hectares allocated for the development of the airport. The remaining 10 hectares have been allocated for housing and other development projects planned in Alifushi.
The airport to be developed in Alifushi will include a 1,200 metre runway, taxiway and apron, along with a terminal building and other facilities required for the airport. The scope of the project also includes coastal protection of the airport development area. The project was contracted to be completed within two years.
