Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts has approved increasing the salaries of vice presidents of atoll councils by USD 65.
The Public Accounts Committee decided to increase the allowance for vice presidents of the atoll councils due to them being obligated to take up more responsibilities upon the absence of the president. At the committee meeting, the decision to increase the salaries of vice presidents of atoll councils was approved with votes from all present members. The decision was made following a request via a letter by the Local Government Authority (LGA) to differentiate the salaries between the vice president and other members of the local councils.
The parliament formulated and approved the pay structure for members of the local councils in April. The pay structure approved in April allocated a salary of USD 1,810 to presidents of atoll councils and USD 1,300 to presidents of island councils. The salary of vice presidents of the atoll councils were also initially set to USD 1,300, but the changes made by the Public Accounts Committee has increased their salary to USD 1,365.
