Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated the Male’ City Council will provide its full support and cooperation to relocate residents of houses located near the premises of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO). He made the statement while speaking to the joint parliamentary committee inquiring into the difficulties faced by people living near STELCO due to the disturbances caused by power generators.
Speaking at the committee, Mayor Muizzu acknowledged the difficulties faced by people living near STELCO, noting some people living in the area have shared their concerns with him regarding the loud noise and vibration caused by the generators. The mayor said residents of these households need to be relocated as soon as possible, and assured that the city council would support and cooperate with the relocation efforts. However, he said the permanent solution to the problem would be to relocate STELCO to a non-residential area.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has also expressed concerns over the deprivation of basic rights to the people living near STELCO. As such, HRCM stated people living in the area are subject to physical and psychological damages due to the power generators operated by STELCO.
