President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has extended his condolences over the passing of former Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Mangala Samaraweera.

In a tweet, President Solih said he was saddened to hear of the passing of former Minister Samaraweera, noting he was a dedicated public servant who contributed greatly to Sri Lanka and a strong advocate of Maldives-Sri Lanka friendship. He extended condolences to the loved ones of Minister Samaraweera, and the people of Sri Lanka.

Samaraweera had served as the foreign minister of Sri Lanka on two separate occasions, first from 2005-2007 and then from 2015-2017. His last official visit to the Maldives came in 2017, during his second tenure as foreign minister.
