Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has begun reviewing the five nominations submitted for the vacant membership position at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated five applicants, including Director of ECM Shahula Ismail and former ECM member Mohamed Asif to be appointed for the vacant membership position. The other nominees are Azleema Ahmed, Ahmed Mansoor, and Mariyam Haneefa Khalid.
The President's Office opened applications for ECM membership after the resignation of the President of ECM Ahmed Shareef from the electoral body. Shareef was appointed to the ECM on March 6, 2018, and resigned on July 15 this year after serving in the commission during three elections.
Announcing his resignation, Shareef said he is satisfied with the work he has done during the last three elections held in the Maldives and that he will continue to work in public service.
