Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated youth engagement is needed in transforming food systems. He made the statement in his speech as the chief guest at the function held to mark International Youth Day, which was organised by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.
Speaking at the function, Minister Hassan highlighted the importance of youth engagement in transforming food systems and government initiatives to empower the youth. He said discussions were held at the youth forum held by the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council has held discussions on the difficulties faced by young people, as well as the importance of youth participation in transforming food systems. As such, Minister Hassan noted that the UN has concluded that youth engagement is needed to transform food systems to improve public health and environmental protection.
The minister said young people could play a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting information on food systems. He added that the aim for this year's International Youth Day is to increase the awareness and participation of youths for the upcoming 2021 UN Food Systems Summit.
Furthermore, Minister Hassan warned the increase in global population necessitates transformations in how the production and distribution of current food systems, and that the Maldives need to focus on growing food locally. In this regard, the minister said the fisheries ministry has already designated 17 agricultural products to be grown locally and is supporting locals in the industry. He urged the youth to accept the training opportunities being offered by the government in various fields.
