Investigation will focus on financing of May 6 attack: Special Envoy

Special Envoy to the Government of the Maldives Abbas Faiz has revealed the investigation of the May 6 terrorist attack is currently focused on how the suspects had financed the attack.

Special Envoy Abbas Faiz expressed his approval of Maldives Police Service (MPS) for its investigation of the attack and of Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem for pressing charges on four of the suspects. Special Envoy Faiz said he has received assurances from MPS and the PG that wider links and financing of the terrorist attack are being investigated.

Additionally, Faiz said that he fully supports PG Shameem's call for a public trial.

MPS has arrested a total of 10 suspects following the May 6 terrorist attack, which had severely injured Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. PGO has raised charges against four suspects in the attack totalling 13 counts, which includes planning and attempting a terrorist act and the use of explosives.

The cases against Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, Thahumeem Ahmed, Ali Haisham, and Mujaaz Ahmed have been submitted to the Criminal Court of the Maldives. In an earlier press conference, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz said the investigation into the May 6 terrorist attack has not found any evidence a group had funded the attack or assigned a reward for its successful execution.
