MPS reveals identity of fifth suspect arrested in relation to May 6 attack

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed the identity of the fifth suspect arrested in relation to the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

MPS stated a fifth suspect had been arrested in relation to the May 6 attack on June 11. MPS said the suspect is 27-year-old Ali Haisham from Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll. MPS said the remand of the suspect had been extended by an additional 15 days on June 27 through a court order.

In addition to Ali Haisham, MPS has arrested four others directly in relation to the May 6 attack. They are 21-year-old Mujaz Ahmed, 32-year-old Thahmeen Ahmed, 25-year-old Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed and 23-year-old Ahmed Fathih.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle near his residence in Male’ was triggered while he was getting into his car on the night of May 6, 2021. The speaker underwent several life-saving surgeries for his injuries, and is currently in Germany for advanced treatment.
