Imthiyaz Fahmy appointed to National Security Services Committee

Parliament of the Maldives has appointed Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla said Imthiyaz Fahmy will take the position of Parliamentarian Ilyaz Labeeb, who had previously represented the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the committee. Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy had previously served as a member of the national security services committee. The parliamentary committee consists of members representing all political parties, as well as one independent member. Parliamentarian Ilyaz Labeeb resigned as a member of the committee last week.

Prior to the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, Ilyas Labeeb had said he warned Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi that such an attack was being planned, and later provided a statement to the committee. The parliamentary committee questioned Parliamentarian Ilyas Labeeb at a closed-door meeting on June 26 as part of its inquiry on the May 6 attack. The committee has stated its aim is to find the source of any security breach relating to the attack against the parliament speaker and give its recommendations to the government to prevent such an incident in the future.

Chairperson Mohamed Aslam has said the committee has obtained enough information to conclude the inquiry and draft a report on the attack within a week.
