The two main Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the Maldives, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, have stated they are prepared to implement the reduced internet prices announced by the government from July onwards.
Dhiraagu and Ooredoo stated they are ready to implement the slashed prices for broadband internet services, which were announced by the government in May. Both companies said they are undertaking the final preparations for the reduced prices and improved services, which are scheduled to take effect next month.
Increasing the quality of internet services in the country and making the services affordable is a key pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. As part of the changes to be brought to internet services, the government is set to reduce the price of residential packages by 28-30% and set the lowest throttle speed to 2 megabits per second. The government has set the throttle speed for packages over USD 19 to 5 megabits per second.
With the new changes, the government has introduced three new packages, which are a USD 16 package with speed of 5 megabits per second, 30 gigabytes of allowance, and 2 megabits per second throttle speed, a USD 32 package with speed of 15 megabits per second, 100 gigabytes of allowance, and 5 megabits per second throttle speed and a USD 45 package with speed of 25 megabits per second, 200 gigabytes of allowance, and 5 megabits per second throttle speed.
The changes will be implemented on July 1 and is set to reduce the internet service prices for around 70% of the population. The changes also include reducing the price of mobile data allowance by 20%, which will be implemented in October.
