Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has assured the government will provide any assistance, requested by Maldivians residing in foreign countries, despite any situation they may face. He made the remarks at a virtual ceremony hosted by Maldivians residing in Australia celebrating his appointment as the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
At the ceremony held in Perth, Western Australia, Minister Abdulla Shahid reiterated his sentiments regarding the win to be elected as the President of the 76th session of the UNGA. As such, the minister said the appointment is proof the international community has accepted the foreign policy of the Maldives.
Shahid said his appointment as the President of the UNGA is an achievement for every Maldivian and the country, which acts as a testament to the leadership roles small island nations can hold. He also appreciated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his forethinking nature which is valuable in maintaining the strengthened foreign policy.
Noting the government will assist all Maldivians in overcoming difficulties faced while residing in foreign countries, the foreign minister revealed discussions are underway to provide assistance during the pandemic.
