Parliamentarian Ilyas Labeeb summoned to parliamentary inquiry into May 6 attack

Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has summoned Parliamentarian Ilyas Labeeb as part of the inquiry into the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

The parliamentary committee questioned Parliamentarian Ilyas Labeeb at a closed-door meeting on June 26. He was summoned in relation to the statement provided earlier about having warned Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi about a potential attack. Prior to the May 6 terrorist attack against the speaker, Ilyas Labeeb had warned the defence minister that such an attack was being planned, and later provided a statement to the parliamentary committee.

Ilyas Labeeb had been a member of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services before his resigning last week. The parliamentary committee previously summoned Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam for the inquiry.

Furthermore, the committee has twice summoned Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal and Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef for questioning. The committee has also questioned numerous other senior state officials as well as military and police officers including Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed and Speaker Nasheed's bodyguards, who are part of the Special Protection Group (SPG) of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Chairperson of the committee Mohamed Aslam recently said that it has obtained enough information to conclude the inquiry and draft a report on the attack within a week.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated near his residence on May 6. MPS has arrested five suspects in relation to the attack, including the individual who allegedly detonated the IED and the owner of the motorcycle to which the device was attached.
