President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has conveyed well wishes to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on its 16th anniversary.
In his message, President Solih, who is one of the leading figures of MDP, conveyed his best wishes to all party members.
Furthermore, MDP President Mohamed Nasheed also expressed his best wishes to party members on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the party. He added peaceful political activities are the cornerstone of improving the welfare of citizens.
MDP celebrated its 16th anniversary on the morning of June 26 with a flag hoisting ceremony in Male' City. The flag hoisting ceremony was held at the MDP office and campaign headquarters in Male' City, while virtual ceremonies were held in some islands. MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, Chairperson Hassan Latheef, Parliamentary Group Leader Ali Azim and other senior party officials joined the ceremony held in Male' City.
The MDP national congress has approved a plan to celebrate the party's 16th anniversary for a month with various activities across the country. MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef said the party will be hosting a special event on June 27 and will continue to hold events to celebrate its anniversary until July 24, adding that MDP President Mohamed Nasheed will be joining the events to be held in July.
Chairperson Latheef said MDP will also be calling party members in the atolls to seek their opinion on various issues. Furthermore, MDP has stated it will be holding a special session of the national congress and launching an online MDP headquarters group on the social media application, Clubhouse.
On June 26, 2005, MDP became the first party to be registered in the Maldives, following the establishment of the multi-party system in the Maldives. The registry of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) shows there are currently nine political parties registered in the Maldives. Since the establishment of the multi-party system, all three presidential elections have been won by a coalition of parties.
