The President's Office has opened applications for the membership of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
A seat in the ECM has been left vacant following the resignation of the president of the electoral body Ahmed Shareef. Ahmed Shareef resigned as the president and as a member of the ECM on June 15 after serving in the commission since March 6, 2018.
The President's Office stated it will accept applications on July 6 and 7, between 1030hrs and 1230hrs. Application forms are available from the President's Office and are available for download at the President's Office website.
Meanwhile, Fuad Thaufeeq has recently expressed interest in becoming the president of the commission. Fuad Thaufeeq is currently a member of the ECM and previously held the presidency of the electoral body.
The constitution dictates that a new president or vice-president should be appointed by the ECM members within 60 days after the position becomes vacant. Currently, there are four members in the commission, including Vice-President of the ECM Ismail Habeeb.
