Ministry of Education has revealed Arabic language and Quran teachers were brought to the Maldives from India as a sufficient number of local teachers were not available.
A total of 10 teachers were brought from Kerala, India among which five teachers are for Arabic language and five teachers are for Quran. The education ministry stated the teachers will teach in nine different schools.
The ministry further stated teachers were brought from India as teachers from the Maldives did not express interest even after several announcements were made. Therefore, the ministry said it sought assistance from the high commissions abroad.
The education ministry stated the 10 teachers brought to the Maldives are sponsored by an Indian recruitment agency and were hired in 2020. Moreover, the ministry noted efforts were made to train teachers on the subjects and curriculum before recruiting foreign teachers.
The ministry assured no foreign teachers will be hired for positions that locals have expressed interest in.
