PPM's Nareesh becomes Deputy Mayor of Male' City

Councillors of Male' City Council have elected Ahmed Nareesh as the Deputy Mayor.

Nareesh was elected with votes from 12 councillors while Ahmed Zameer from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) received 7 votes.

The Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) has the majority of seats in the Male' City Council for the first time since the establishment of the city council in 2011. The opposition coalition consisting of PPM and the People's National Congress (PNC) holds 13 of the 19 seats in the Male' City Council. The remaining 6 councillors are from MDP.

The Local Government Authority (LGA) has ordered all local councils to elect the deputy mayors and vice presidents before June 20.
