PG expects the terror attack probe to be completed next month

Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has stated he expects the investigation on the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed to be completed next month.

At a press conference, the PG said he is satisfied with the progress of the investigation and the collaboration between the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO), and international investigators. The PG said cases such as the May 6 terrorist attack requires investigators to be methodical and quick enough to catch the suspects involved before they destroy the evidence. Shameem said he expects the investigation to be completed next month, adding a case would be submitted to the court before August 5. Investigators are still probing deeper into the case to discover the financers of the attack, and that the investigation will continue even after the suspects are presented to the court, he said.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence on May 6. Immediately after the attack, Nasheed underwent multiple life-saving surgeries on injuries to his head, chest, abdomen, and limbs over the course of 16 hours at ADK Hospital in Male'. He was airlifted to Germany on May 13 for further treatment and has since been discharged.

MPS has arrested five suspects in relation to the attack, including the individual who allegedly detonated the IED and the owner of the motorcycle to which the device was attached. Since the attack, MPS has also carried out multiple anti-terrorism operations across the country and has made numerous arrests.
