Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has announced a plan to make major changes to the Male' North Harbour and state housing block, Bandeyri Koshi. The planning ministry revealed the changes in a presentation at the public consultation meeting held by the Male' City Council on the land-use plan of the capital of the Maldives.
The proposed changes included developing the Male' North Harbour area as a large water-front recreational area for the city to hold sports and other events, after transferring the Male' Commercial Harbour to the industrial island, Gulhifalhu. The changes to the Male' North Harbour area include developing a swimming pool, a cinema, a floating hotel and restaurant as well as further developing the shops in the area, establishing a walkway, and banning private vehicles. The plan also includes the development of a modern central ferry terminal and a cruise terminal at the harbour as well as converting the local market into a fisherman's market and transferring the traveller's market to the west park area.
In the presentation, the ministry also announced a major development plan for Bandeyri Koshi, which is used as a housing block for military officers and their families, with the construction of apartment buildings, office towers, a futsal campus, a park, and shops.
Other changes announced by the ministry include developing the vacant area near Rasfannu beach area into a venue for social events and a market hall for small businesses as well as the development of the carnival area, parking buildings, and roads in the city.
