Travellers from Maldives banned from entering Japan

Japan has placed travellers from the Maldives on its no entry list.

Japan decided to impose an entry ban on travellers who have stayed in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives in the last 14 days as part of the efforts to prevent the spread of a more contagious COVID-19 variant first found in India. According to Kyodo News, foreign nationals with a valid status of residency in Japan who have visited Bangladesh and the Maldives will also be refused entry unless they fall into special circumstances. The entry-ban, which takes effect from May 20, does not apply to Japanese citizens.

Japan has already implemented similar entry ban on foreigners with resident status in the country who have stayed in India, Nepal and Pakistan, due to the spread of the variant. A total of 159 countries are on the no entry list of Japan including countries such as Saudi Arabia, Canada and the United States.

Due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in the Maldives, many countries are banning entry to Maldivians and tourists who have travelled to the country. As such, Maldives is on the red list of the United Kingdom which requires Maldivians and people travelling from the Maldives to quarantine for a period of 10- days upon arrival.
