Security tightened around Parliament premises following security threat

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) tightens the security around the premises of the Parliament of the Maldives after receiving information of a potential security threat.

MNDF stated the security of the parliament building and the area surrounding the parliament premises have been tightened due to a security threat. However, no further details have been disclosed on the matter.

Meanwhile, the parliament had earlier informed Maldives Police Service (MPS) on a potential threat after a comment was posted on the live stream of a parliament sitting stating the parliament needs to be blown up. The case is under investigation by the police.

Earlier this month, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence in Male’ as he was getting into his car. The speaker underwent life-saving surgeries on injuries to his head, chest, abdomen and limbs over the course of 16 hours. He is currently in Germany for further treatment.

Three people have been arrested in relation to the attack on Speaker Nasheed. This includes the individual that allegedly detonated the IED, and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached.
