Parliament passes decision to conduct inquiry into Speaker’s security breach

Parliament of the Maldives has passed the decision to conduct a high-level inquiry into the breach of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed’s security in the terrorist attack near his residence on May 6.

During the sitting held on May 17, the parliament passed the report prepared by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services regarding the attack on Speaker Nasheed. The report included six main recommendations, including the recommendation to conduct a high-level inquiry into the breach of the speaker’s security on May 6, with technical assistance from local and foreign experts. The report also recommended Maldives Police Service (MPS) to share information with the parliament committee regarding the progress of the investigation.

Furthermore, the report highlighted the importance of fast-tracking the investigation into the attack, and gathering all potential evidence before perpetrators could destroy the evidence. The report also called on investigative authorities to take into account the difficulties and challenges faced in investigating acts of terrorism in the past, in order to ensure the current investigation is carried out effectively.

Parliamentarians who spoke during the sitting on May 17 described the attack against the speaker as an attack on the democracy and people of the Maldives. Parliamentarians called on security forces to take the necessary measures required to ensure there is no repeat of the attack in the future.
