Speaker vows to continue with his duties despite the attack against him

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has vowed to continue with the duties entrusted in him by the people despite being the target of a terrorist attack on May 6.

Addressing the parliament sitting held on May 17 while undergoing treatment in Germany, Speaker Nasheed expressed gratitude to the members of the parliament for continuing work on the important tasks in hand, despite the situation. The speaker said he will be returning to work as soon as possible and vowed to continue with his duties despite the attack on him.

On May 6, Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence. Nasheed underwent a 16-hour operation at ADK Hospital after the attack, and is now in Germany for further treatment.

So far, three suspects have been arrested in relation to the attack. This includes the individual that allegedly detonated the IED, and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached.

The government has strengthened security across the Maldives since the attack, with armed military officers becoming more active in the Greater Male' Region and the atolls. Furthermore, President Solih has instructed the attorney general to amend the existing laws to strengthen the security and protection provided to the speaker of parliament and the chief justice, including the designation of their official residences.
