Expenses of Speaker’s treatment in Germany covered by German government

Parliament of the Maldives has revealed the expenses of the advanced medical treatment to be provided to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed in Germany will be covered by the German government.

Speaker Nasheed departed to Germany on May 13 for further treatment of the injuries sustained in the terrorist attack near his residence in Male’ on May 6. The speaker was escorted from ADK Hospital to Velana International Airport (VIA) by a high-security team consisting of heavily-armed military officers, which had cordoned off the roads. After being escorted to the airport, Nasheed left the country in an air ambulance provided by the government of Germany.

The parliament revealed the expenses of the speaker’s treatment is Germany is covered by the German government, facilitated by the Honorary Consul of the Maldives in Germany Christian von Stetten. The parliament said all arrangements of the trip were made by the German government.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured in a terrorist attack on May 6 after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence. Since the attack, Nasheed had been recovering in ADK Hospital after undergoing a 16-hour life-saving operation over injuries to various parts of his body including his head and chest. Nasheed's family has thanked the staff at ADK Hospital and said his health is improving. Furthermore, in his first tweet since the attack, Nasheed thanked the Maldivian health sector and all health workers in the country on International Nurses Day on May 12.

The medical team that treated Nasheed after the attack stated he had sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack, which could have been fatal. The team of doctors stated Nasheed had to undergo hours of surgery to extract shrapnel that were lodged inside his body, which had damaged his ribs and vital organs, and that one piece of shrapnel had been one centimeter away from his heart.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested three suspects over the plot, including the individual that allegedly detonated the IED, and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached.
