President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has condemned Israel's violence against Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and attempts to evict Palestinians from their homes.
In a tweet, President Solih said Israel continues to violate international law by forcefully evicting Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah and escalating attacks on Muslims offering prayers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The president said the Maldives condemns Israel's actions and remains in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Earlier this week, Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and attacked the Palestinians who were on guard to prevent raids, who had announced to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque to celebrate the anniversary of the Six-Day War of 1967, when Israel occupied East Jerusalem. Israeli police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the crowds after the breaking of the daily Ramadan fast. Some 200 Palestinians were hurt, and 17 police officers were injured during the clash.
Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police erupted in East Jerusalem after days of unrest triggered by plans to evict Palestinians from land claimed by Jewish settlers. Israel has come under growing international pressure to halt planned evictions from East Jerusalem organized by Israeli settlers, which aim to displace Palestinians from Jerusalem, including the families of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
