Parliament committee launches inquiry into breach of Speaker’s security

Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has launched an inquiry into the breach of the security provided to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed during the terrorist attack aimed at him on May 6.

Following an emergency meeting, the parliament committee stated it has decided to conduct an inquiry into the breach of the Speaker’s security, to identify any negligence involved that led to the incident. The committee has also called investigative authorities to carry out the investigation into the attack as an urgent, serious investigation and to not allow perpetrators an opportunity to destroy evidence. The committee also advised to seek technical assistance from foreign experts for the investigation.

Three people have been arrested in relation to the attack against the Speaker on May 6. This includes the person suspected of detonating the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while the Speaker was walking towards his car, as well as the owner of the motorcycle on which the IED was attached.

Speaker Nasheed suffered serious life-threatening injuries due to the attack. Following multiple life-saving surgeries, the speaker has been placed in intensive care at ADK Hospital. The hospital has revealed he is gradually recovering from the injuries.
