The United Kingdom has decided to assist the Maldives in the investigation into the recent attack targeting Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed made the announcement at the press conference held to reveal the details about the individuals arrested in relation to the attack.
At the press conference, Hameed said a senior officer from the Counter Terrorism Command of Metropolitan Police will arrive in the Maldives to support and assist the investigation. He added the British authorities have provided technical expertise remotely since launching the investigation.
Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Maldives Caron Rohsler affirmed that the United Kingdom stands with the Maldives against acts of violence and terror such as that witnessed on May 6. Noting the partnership and inter-agency collaboration are the key, she said work will be done more intensively with relevant authorities to end impunity and bring perpetrators to justice.
Moreover, a team from the Australian Federal Police arrived in the Maldives for the investigation into the explosion on May 6 that wounded the Speaker Nasheed, members of his security detail and several bystanders. Three people have now been arrested in relation to the attack.
