President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has ordered an intelligence audit on the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) over the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
While speaking to the press outside ADK Hospital after visiting the speaker President Solih said he has ordered the relevant authorities to conduct the audit, and that MNDF will be submitting a detailed report on the security procedures for Nasheed. President Solih said the decision to conduct an intelligence audit was made after a meeting with the National Security Council. He said the audit will reveal how intelligence officials failed to uncover the terrorist plot, and provide the necessary information on improving the security services and make the necessary changes to prevent such an incident.
Furthermore, President Solih said Speaker Nasheed is a beloved figure in the country who has shown bravery in the face of danger on numerous occasions, and asked members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to remain brave as well.
The explosion near his residence in Male' City on the night of May 6 wounded the speaker, members of his security detail and several bystanders. Nasheed has suffered serious, life-threatening injuries in the attack and is currently in intensive care multiple life-saving surgeries. MPS has arrested three suspects in connection with the case.
