Speaker suffered serious, life-threatening injuries: ADK

ADK Hospital has revealed Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed had suffered serious, life-threatening injuries in the terrorist attack near his residence in Male’ on May 6.

The team of doctors from ADK Hospital that treated Speaker Nasheed held a press conference on May 8 to provide information of the injuries sustained by him in the attack. The doctors revealed several ball bearings and shrapnel were lodged inside his body, shattering some of his ribs and damaging vital organs.

The doctors further noted the Speaker’s intestines were perforated due to shrapnel, which usually leads to infection due to leakage of waste. However, they noted the risk of infection was lowered as the Speaker’s bowels were mostly empty at the time.

The Speaker was brought to ADK for treatment of injuries suffered in an explosion in Neeloafaru Hingun on May 6 while he was getting into his car. ADK Hospital revealed the Speaker underwent life-saving surgery on injuries to his head, chest, abdomen and limbs over the course of 16 hours. The hospital said following a successful final, critical life-saving procedure, the Speaker has been placed in intensive care in critical condition.

Speaker Nasheed was the target of an attack on May 6 which also left members of his security team and some innocent bystanders injured. Two people have so far been arrested in relation to the attack.
