Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated uniformed officers of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will reach the perpetrators of the May 6 terror attack very soon.
Speaking at a press conference held on May 7, Defence Minister Mariya said the government, law enforcement agencies and the people of the Maldives will not be intimidated by such attacks. The minister said uniformed officers will reach the perpetrators of the attack and bring them in front of justice very soon. She added MNDF will not back down in the fight against violence and terrorism.
Speaking further, Minister Mariya said the attack against Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed shows the level of danger posed by terrorists to every citizen of the country. Noting the country must unite in bringing the perpetrators of the attack in front of justice, the minister urged the public to share any kind of information they have that might even be remotely related to the incident.
Speaker Nasheed suffered multiple injuries in the explosion which took place near his residence in Male’ on May 6. He is currently being treated in intensive care at ADK Hospital, following multiple life-saving surgeries.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has commenced a criminal investigation to find the perpetrators of the attack. So far, two people have been arrested in relation to the attack.
