Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested two suspects over the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
In a press conference held on May 8, MPS revealed 21-year-old Mujaz Ahmed and 32-year-old Thahumeen Ahmed were arrested in relation to the attack on May 6. One of the suspects appreheneded was the owner of the vehicle on which the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was attached.
MPS also revealed footage near the scene of the incident which shows the activity of the primary suspect of the attack, who has not yet been apprehended. MPS requested the public to come forward with any information they may have on this suspect.
Furthermore, MPS noted the motorcycle on which the explosive device was attached had a fake number plate, and attempts had been made to scratch off its registration number. However, MPS said the police had managed to extract the registration information and arrest the person who owns the vehicle.
The explosion near his residence in Male' on May 6 wounded the Speaker, members of his security detail and several bystanders. Speaker Nasheed was placed in intensive care in critical condition after undergoing multiple life-saving surgeries.
