Ex-President Maumoon was denied healthcare rights while in prison: HRCM

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has ruled that former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom was denied the right to seek proper medical treatment while he was detained in prison in 2018.

Former President Maumoon was imprisoned in February 2018 after being accused of conspiring to bring down the administration of his brother and then-President Abdulla Yameen. A case was submitted to HRCM against Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) in June 2018, stating former President Maumoon was denied the right to seek proper medical treatment for his health condition while in prison.

After more than 3 years, HRCM has issued a verdict in the case stating the former President was denied his fundamental right to seek healthcare. In its verdict, HRCM stated MCS failed to facilitate proper treatment for former President Maumoon, despite the medical advice of doctors regarding his condition. Therefore, HRCM ruled that the former President was denied the right to seek healthcare as described in Article 23 of the Constitution of the Maldives.

Although HRCM ruled that MCS had violated the rights of the former President, a course of action has not yet been revealed.
